Boris Grushenko is in love with Sonja. When she marries, Boris despairs of life. Fortunately, there’s a war on, since Napoleon has invaded, and Boris puts his lack of heroism to the test. Inept and bumbling, the nervous pacifist not only survives the war but becomes a hero. Now widowed Sonja declares she’ll marry him after all. Once married, the two spend their time arguing. They both love philosophy and might talk each other to death but Sonja is a woman of action. She decides they should assassinate Napoleon, something nervous Boris thinks foolish. He agrees, only to find himself caught. In prison, he has a vision of being rescued, but death, also something of a philosopher, fools him and catches him anyway.
