Overview
Peter Appleton is a Hollywood screenwriter who is enjoying a very successful career. He makes a good living for himself, and his movies are well-received. His latest seems poised to be a big hit, and he is happily dating a beautiful movie star. All seems well, but it's 1951, and he is a victim of the anti-Communist paranoia that has struck Hollywood. He once attended a Communist meeting by accident in college, so he's blacklisted. After wallowing in misery for a night, he gets into a car accident and turns up in a small town with no memory. The townspeople believe him to be a beloved resident who had vanished some time earlier, and he assumes he is, but others suspect he has a secret.
