When the government desegregates Birmingham's Woodlawn High School in 1973, the school must deal with a shocking amount of anger and racism. Tony Nathan is a gifted African-American football player who joins the Woodlawn Colonels football team. As the city deals with race riots, the team's coach struggles to bring the team together. He accepts the help of a Christian outsider in order to convince the team to set aside their differences, and the racially integrated Woodlawn Colonels begin to unite the community.
