A young woman named Robyn Davidson decides in 1977 to leave her comfortable, familiar life behind, enticed by the hope of adventure and the unknown, and trek on foot across the vast terrain of the uncivilized Australian desert. Despite criticism and skepticism from others, she crosses 1,700 miles from Alice Springs to the Indian Ocean, what promises to be an endeavor of about six months, accompanied only by her dog, four camels, and Rick Smolan, a professional photographer who chronicles her journey. As Robyn braves the dangers of the desert’s harsh conditions and threatening wildlife, and tests the limits of her physical endurance as well as her mental fortitude, her quest becomes not merely an extremely long walk, but also her own personal path toward romance, companionship, self-fulfillment, and discovery.
