Mary-Claire King is geneticist who believes that genetics may be one of the keys to breast cancer, but she is having difficulty in convincing her colleagues of her theory. King then meets breast cancer patient Annie Parker, a young mother, and the two strike up a friendship. Parker has lost both her mother and sister to breast cancer and may give King vital clues in her search for a genetic cause. King, through Annie's help, eventually makes the discovery that will change how breast cancer is diagnosed and treated.
