Francis is a nine-year-old orphan who is taken in by a kindly woman named Maddie, who must deal with an obnoxious mother-in-law and a husband with a roving eye. Maddie remains good-natured, and pouring her energy into caring for Francis helps her to take her mind off her troubles. As Francis ages, however, some local tongues begin to wag, and there are implications that there might be something improper in the relationship between the two of them. A portrait of small-town life in the ranching areas of Texas emerges, with all the grit and gossip that this entails. Some of the people around Francis and Maddie are supportive, while others assault them with acidic lies. Can they survive the onslaught, or must Francis move on? |
