Eugene Brown has had a difficult life. He spent several years in prison for a crime committed at an early age, so he knows how tough the streets can be for someone just getting started in life. He decides that the time has come to give back and to share the benefit of his experience with the next generation. Hence, in the midst of inner-city Washington, D.C., he starts up a chess club so that teenagers can channel their energy into something productive and intellectually stimulating instead of roaming the streets and indulging in violence and crime.
