Martial arts master Ip Man enjoyed a peaceful childhood that included training in Wing Chun from the revered teacher Chan Wah-shun. His extensive knowledge of martial arts brought him discipline, but he did not need to use it for actual self-defense. He settled into a happy marriage with Cheung Wing-sing, but then he is plucked out of his pleasant life when he is selected as the martial arts champion representing the South. He goes up against champion Gong Yutian and finds himself in an intense exchange of ideas that is more taxing than physical fighting. Several other challenging experiences are also instrumental in preparing him for the role for which he is most famous - training the renowned martial artist and movie star Bruce Lee.
