Four Australian Aboriginal sisters, Cindy, Gail, Julie and Kay play witness to one of the most significant years in recent history - 1968. As the world suffers through major upheavals, including the Vietnam War, anti-government protests and the assassinations of Bobby Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr., the girls' singing group is discovered by a talent agent, Dave, just as Aborigines are gaining significant rights in their homeland. Although Dave has not a musical bone in his body, he recognizes the sisters' talent and bills them as The Sapphires, the Australian version of The Supremes. To their surprise, Dave secures the group their first gig, flying to Vietnam to entertain the American troops. As they learn to deal with their newfound freedom and fame, the girls also come to gain a greater understanding of the world in which they now live and the importance of staying true to your family.
