One day in 1993, three small boys went missing from West Memphis, Arkansas. Stevie Branch, Christopher Byers and Michael Moore were never found alive again. Their bodies were found bound and beaten the next day. The extremely religious residents of West Memphis believed the boys were killed by a cult. The tiny police department was convinced it was a cult too. Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley were taken into custody a month after the murders and interrogated for twelve hours. Misskelley was seventeen at the time and mentally handicapped but confessed after the long interrogation. Despite lack of evidence, the three were convicted of the crimes. Later, the three hired forensic experts and investigators to assert their innocence. New evidence in the case would have cast reasonable doubt on the case, but the courts wouldn't hear the case or grant a new trial for many years.
