Poet Mark O'Brien is paralyzed from the neck down due to post-polio syndrome and lives a large portion of each day in an iron lung. Due to his condition, he has never been with a woman sexually. He tries is frustrated by this and tries to proposition one of his female aids, who rebukes his advance. He decides to see a sexual surrogate to gain experience. He speaks to his priest and gains his blessing. His therapist gives him Cheryl's information, and they begin a series of sexual surrogacy sessions. Feeling develop between Mark and Cheryl over the course of several sessions, and they end the relationship before it gets out of hand. Some time later, the power is interrupted overnight in Mark's apartment, shutting down his iron lung. He meets another woman as he recovers from the incident, and she remains his companion until his death. |
