The Seediq were a clan forced to give up their culture and religion during the Japanese takeover of Taiwan. Men were forced to give up their traditional work in the woods and field and instead do manual labor, while women were forced to become domestic servants. Worse still, they were not allowed to apply the traditional tattoos to their faces, which mean they could not be true humans in their eyes. Protagonist Mona Rudao and her sons Tado Mona and Baso Mona all lead a band of 300 tribal warriors against more than 3,000 Japanese policemen to regain their freedom and traditional way of life.
