Cold Mountain takes place during the American Civil War. The story centers around Inman, a soldier for the southern army, and Ada Monroe, the woman he is in love with. The two must deal with a lengthy separation when Inman goes to fight in the war, and the realization that they may never end up in each other's arms again. Aside from the Civil War, the story depicts the very real struggles that Ada is facing back at home. With her respected father passed away, and no man to look after her or the land she owns, she has been overwhelmed by loss, poverty, and hopelessness. Despite the aid of neighbors and friends, she is headed down a miserable path. That is, until the young and energetic Ruby Thewes comes into her life and changes things forever.
