The sinking of the Titanic results in the death of the heir to the English estate owned by the aristocratic Crawleys. Since it’s entailed away from his daughters, Lord Grantham seeks out cousin Matthew who will now inherit it. Matthew, a country solicitor, is initially leery of the changes to his life but ends up embracing them, and embracing the oldest Crawley daughter, Lady Mary. This is just the beginning of the many changes the family and their servants will go through as the estate lives through the vicissitudes of the First World War and the Roaring Twenties. The changes aren’t always easy, especially for the older generation represented by Lord and Lady Grantham and Lord Grantham’s mother the Dowager Countess Violet.
