When middle-class student Charles Ryder enters Oxford University, he becomes fascinated with the eccentric Sebastian Flyte, the son of the wealthy Catholic Marchmain family. The two strike up a devoted friendship and Sebastian rescues Charles from his humdrum life when he invites him to spend time at the family estate. Enamored with the family's lavish lifestyle, Charles is fascinated with Sebastian's elegant mother and beautiful sister Julia. As Sebastian sinks into alcoholism, Charles finds himself torn between the wishes of the Marchmain family and his friend's emotional problems.
