First air date
September 13, 1990
Law & Order is the original crime procedural series. It first aired in 1990, and new episodes were produced for 20 seasons. Though cast members would come and go over the years, Sam Waterston's district attorney Jack McCoy came to represent the show, having appeared in every episode since 1994. Other classic cast members include Jerry Orbach's wry detective Lenny Briscoe and the beautiful conservative attorney Abby Carmichael, played by Angie Harmon. Every episode opened with the discovery of a dead body, and the investigation would progress from there. The show was filmed in a documentary style, which added to the pre-Giuliani New York feel of the early episodes. The show continued to push boundaries with interesting story lines and gutsy acting until its cancellation in 2009.
