During the Great Depression in Georgia, there aren't many opportunities for a girl like Rose, so she takes a job as a housekeeper for the Hillyer family to avoid having to sell her body in order to pay the bills. She soon develops a crush on the family patriarch but finds that Mrs. Hillyer soon takes her under her wing in order to avoid a plot being hatched by her husband and the local doctor to sterilize Rose so that she won't become pregnant after being sexually promiscuous. |
