Overview
In the mid-1960s, Arlo Guthrie is attending a college in Montana in an attempt to avoid the draft. His unorthodox lifestyle and long hair causes problems with the local residents and the police. He gets kicked out of college and hitchhikes cross-country to his friends’ home, a haven for other hippies in Massachusetts. After a Thanksgiving dinner at their home, Arlo and his friends decide to help clean up the place by hauling off several months of garbage. Unfortunately, when they arrive at the local dump, they find it closed. They decide to throw their garbage outside and are later arrested by Officer Obie, the police chief, for littering. The judge, who is blind, can’t see the extensive photographic evidence and only fines them $50. Now, Arlo has an arrest record and is no longer eligible for the draft.
