When a well-to-do Cincinatti college student named Matt meets Jewel, a poor country girl in Kentucky, he begins to rethink his engagement to his debutante fiancee. He is enamored with Jewel's energy and enthusiasm but isn't aware of the dark secret she is hiding: at just 16 years old, she is already married. Unfortunately, her husband is a much older man and their relationship revolves around her trying to escape her sexually abusive stepfather and later, her husband's father. Matt knows he has feelings for Jewel that he can't escape but due to his social standing, he knows he can never marry someone like Jewel. Eventually, they go their own ways despite their feelings for each other and Jewel finds another wealthy college student who is willing to devote himself to her. |
