The tensions in South Africa are high in 1976 and everyone can feel it. When the government of South Africa decides to make the Dutch language of Afrikaans the language that is taught in schools, the people protest. Sarafina is a South African woman who has had enough of Apartheid and all of the indignity that it brings. She has watched her mother be enslaved as the house servant of a white family and she now sees the white government in South Africa trying to impose their language on South African children. When one of the teachers at Sarafina's old school is put into prison for her opposition to Afrikaans, Sarafina leads a revolt that is based on the actual events of the Soweto Riots.
