The soundtrack to the 1960's can be heard through record labels such as Motown and Capitol. A group of African American performers decide to add their voices to that soundtrack by starting their own singing group and calling it the Five Heartbeats. In the early years of the group, things are tough. The music business is not what the five talented young men had expected it to be. But through hard work and a lot of personal sacrifice, the Five Heartbeats find success, fame, and fortune. But the rise to the top leaves the five members of the group wondering if, in the end, it was all even worth it. The devastation success causes to each of their lives is a tough price to pay for a ride to the top.
