Ulysses Jackson, known as Ulee to friends and family, is a beekeeper, Vietnam veteran, widower and grandfather. When his son is sent to prison and his drug addict daughter in law disappears, Ulee is left with no choice but his raise his two young granddaughters. Ulee's son convinces him to hunt down his wayward daughter in law and reunite her with her children. Trying to do his best for his granddaughters, Ulee finds their mother, bringing her home and, with the help of his neighbor, Connie, he helps the girls' mother through detox. Just as it seems that things are looking up for Ulee and his family, his son's past shows up in the form of two men looking for a hidden stash of cash from a robbery.
