Phyllis Saroka, a New York City P.E. teacher, longs to open a restaurant. To make more money, she accepts a position as the basketball coach at Sunset Park High School. She knows nothing about basketball, and her new team assumes as much. Saroka, only interested in her paycheck, allows the team to do as they please. During their first season game, she gives them poor coaching advise. They lose the game and are furious with her. Feeling guilty, Saroka becomes a basketball expert. She applies new strategies, and the team begins to win games. They make it to a championship at Madison Square Garden but lose by a few points. Moved by their heroism, Saroka vows to return to coach them the following year.
