The year is 1965, and the place is Indonesia -- a dangerous place for Guy Hamilton, an Australian reporter watching a violent coup unfold from up close. With an inflated sense of his own talent and importance, Guy realizes this assignment offers him journalistic fame as well as fun. He benefits from a quixotic relationship with a Chinese photographer Billy Kwan, who helps Guy navigate the streets and develop a sense of right and wrong in his actions. In the meantime, while Guy gets into some hairy scrapes with the authorities, he pleasantly divides his attentions with a budding romance with the attractive British diplomat Jill Bryant. Eventually he must make a choice -- get the story or get the girl. |
