Join Tevye, a Jewish peasant with 5 daughters, as he narrates his life in the poor village of Anatevka through his prayers. Tradition is this town's foundation, but things change when his oldest daughters start falling in love outside of the norm. Tevya breaks an agreement with the butcher to let his oldest daughter marry the tailor she loves, and he consents to letting his next oldest become engaged to a Communist pauper headed to Russia. But when the middle girl elopes with a Gentile, he personally disowns her to hold onto his beliefs. Meanwhile, a gradual arising of antisemitic prejudices lead to the entire village being forced off their land. Family and friends split up as they search for someplace else to call home.
