The classic story of "The Wizard of Oz" gets updated with a black cast who sing and dance their way through a magical adventure. It's still the tale of Dorothy, but this time she is from Harlem instead of Kansas, and she is 24 instead of a young teen. Still, her development is rather arrested; she is shy and reserved, and she does not embrace life, so going to Oz signals a huge change in perspective for her. As she tries to make her way to the Wiz, who can help her to find fulfillment and a way home, she makes several new friends, each of whom is battling his own issues. She also must square off against a vicious witch whose name is Evillene.
