A group travels to the desert to re-enact the final days of Jesus Christ on earth. As they prepare for the performance, they slowly transform into the characters from Christ's Passion. Judas begins to question the wisdom of following Jesus, fearing the increasing support he is receiving from the Jewish people. The other disciples push Jesus to give them information about his future and plans, but his answers are cryptic and difficult to decipher. Others, particularly Mary Magdalene, clearly adore and worship him. Eventually, Jesus is betrayed by his own men and handed over to the Romans, who intend to make an example of him by crucifying him. His followers try to understand how they got to this place and what they might have done differently, all while watching Jesus die a tortured death.
