Lottie and Rose are two London women who have spent most of their lives in English high society, but along with their husbands, they have decided to get away from it all for a while by spending April in Italy. The appeal of this locale is a drowsy sense of beauty and simply being able to live life without worry about expectations of society or anyone else. The splendor of Italy is on full display as it almost becomes a character in and of itself. There is no sense of urgency or hurry in their lives or in the minds of the audience, just a sense of overwhelming peace and tranquility. What little conflict arises can do little to damage the sense of quiet calm.
