The Carmichael's are a close-knit clan that gamely deals with a colorful group of neighbors, including glue sniffers, Snuffy and Right Hand Man. The children's innocence is shattered when schoolteacher Carolyn becomes gravely ill. Nate and Troy are sent down south to stay with relatives. She makes fast friedns with cousin Viola, but misses home. When Troy returns she find out that Carolyn is in the hospital. As the only girl, Troy builds up a wall between Woody and her siblings. This tragedy will either bring them all closer together or create a permanent rift. Troy experiences a breakthrough that allows her to accept the situation.
