Max Lowe, a medical doctor from Texas, is depressed following the death of a patient. He heads to India hoping to find respite from his weariness. While in Calcutta, he is mugged and left for dead without any of his travel documents or money. Fortunately, he is taken in by Hasari Pal, a kind man who has recently moved his family to the city from their farm. Hasari takes Dr. Lowe to a slum area populated by lepers. Despite their illness and poverty, these people seem to have a joy that Dr. Lowe lacks. Max is humbled by this, but also afraid to get too involved in their lives at first . The Irish woman who runs the clinic convinces him that it’s worth it.
