After being involved in a biking accident, Lose Angeles Times columnist Steve Lopez realizes that he is not only hurting physically, but also that the well-being of his career is in a painful downward spiral. The year is 2005 and it is getting harder to find a good story, which leads him to meet a man named Nathaniel Ayers. Nathaniel is a street musician who is homeless and mentally ill, but possesses a huge amount of musical talent. The fact this his instruments are half-broken does not stop him from creating beautiful music. Lopez, being inspired by Nathaniel and his story, ends up writing about it in his column. This starts a chain of events that inevitably helps improve the life of not only those like Nathaniel, but all of the underclass people of Los Angeles.
