Lily Owens is as troubled as a 14-year-old girl can be. She lives with her abusive father and desperately misses her deceased mother. Seeking answers and a new lease on life, she compels her caretaker Rosaleen to join her on a journey to fill in a gap in her mother's history. The two of them journey to a town in South Carolina where her mother spent some of the happiest days of her life. Lily and Rosaleen find themselves at the home of the Boatman sisters. August is warm and matronly, while June is a bit of a spitfire. Gentle May is a bit on the slow side but extremely kind. Together, they teach her about beekeeping and about the joy of community, especially sisterhood.
