Anna is a widow who travels to Siam with her son to be a governess to King Mongkut's children. When she finds out that the house that he promised her will not be given to her, she threatens to leave until sees the children and instantly falls in love. As Anna teaches, her British beliefs and fearless defiance clash with the ways of the King, and their arguments create a tumultous yet loyal friendship. When an unhappy wife of the King's is caught after running away, he proves his strength by ordering punishment, but Anna's anger at his choices infuriates them both and stops the beating. She prepares to leave, but the day her boat arrives she is sent word that the king is dying. Anna meets with him and promises that she will stay and teach his young son, who becomes king at the end of the movie as the king dies. |
