The Little family visits an orphanage to adopt a new member of the family. George, the only son, insists on choosing a little brother. The request of the family is granted as they are offered the adoption rights of a small, talking mouse named Stuart. George is not initially very excited about the idea of having a mouse as a brother. When the family returns home with their newest member, the house cat is less than pleased by the decision. Stuart must work hard to gather the love and affection of his new family and the acceptance by the cat who repeatedly torments him. After a series of entertaining adventures Stuart begins to feel welcomed into a loving family and thinks of himself as a Little.
