Overview
The time is 1943 and the United States Navy is slowly reaching its peak. They already have many bases located in the Solomon Islands, but they are preparing to launch an invasion into the Central Pacific, as well as in New Guinea. A French planter who goes by the name of Emile de Becque lives on one of these islands. The navy seeks to employ Emile in order to have a scout for islands, which the Japanese happen to be holding nearby. In order to get Emile under American employ, they order a United States Navy nurse, Nellie Forbush, to accomplish this very important mission. As the two of these people meet and realize what is happening, they understand that their important mission may entail falling in love.
