In this American drama, egotistical and selfish Charlie Babbitt returns home to settle his estranged father's estate. During the course of the proceedings, he learns that he has an older brother named Raymond. Raymond, a gentle autistic savant, was put into a care facility after his intentions towards Charlie were misunderstood in childhood. Their father had left his entire estate, minus some prize-winning rose bushes, to Raymond. Charlie kidnaps Raymond and they embark on a cross-country journey together. Over the course of the trip, Charlie learns about patience and love. Originally hoping to gain ransom for Raymond's safe return, Charlie agrees to allow his brother to return to the care facility and promises to visit him often.
