Feeling that he is making no difference, Dr. Robert Verne gives up his attempts to change life in an inner-city tenement and accepts an assignment with the Environmental Protection Agency to write a report about a logging operation in Maine. A rescue team has gone missing, and the logging company owner is blaming it on a long-standing dispute with the Opies, a local Indian tribe. After arriving with his wife, Verne learns that the confrontation is at times violent. He also learns that the Opie feel that a string of unexplained tragedies in the area is the work of Katahdin, a vengeful forest spirit awakened by the logging operation. Verne, his wife and others in their party soon find themselves in a life-and-death struggle to find a natural explanation for these events before they are overcome by the evil spirit that has overtaken the forest.
