Overview
On board the slave ship La Amistad, sailing from Cuba with slaves taken in Sierra Leone, a mutiny breaks out. A slave named Cinque leads his fellow slaves to overthrow the sailors in a bid for his people’s freedom. The ship is eventually picked up by a U.S. sailing vessel on the Atlantic coast, and Cinque and his fellow slaves end up standing trial for the crime of insurrection. Two abolitionists enlist the help of former president John Quincy Adams to present a case to free Cinque and the others. At first, Adams is reluctant to become involved, but eventually, after hearing Cinque’s story, he realizes that huge issues of freedom are at stake and helps them to victory in court.
