In this comedy-drama about a week in the sweet life of Marcello Rubini, a journalist who juggles brief romantic encounters with a string of Italian beauties while nursing his fiancee, Emma, through a medical mishap and investigating the occasional news story. A visiting Swedish-American actress, Sylvia, fulfils the dual functions of providing article fodder and serving as Marcello's aquatic dance partner. Following a disastrous pilgrimage to cover a recent siting of the Madonna, Marcello waxes philosophical with his friend, Steiner, after which he has an encounter with Paola, an enchanting waitress from Perugia. Later this same week, Marcello dodges a marriage proposal from the lovely Maddalena and tries to fix up his father with one of his own former one-night stands. Fiancee Emma makes another appearance before Marcello receives tragic news about Steiner and tries to provoke an orgy at another party. |
