Overview
When Hamlet, prince of Denmark, is visited by his father’s ghost, he’s sent to avenge his father’s murder. The murder is his uncle Claudius, now married to his mother. Hamlet must pretend to be mad in order to divert attention from his quest to discover if what the ghost told him is true. The young woman who loves Hamlet, Ophelia, becomes so alarmed by his behavior that she alerts her father Polonius. Hamlet grows angry at Ophelia. Later he accidentally kills her father, who is hidden behind a curtain, thinking it is his uncle. Ophelia goes mad with grief and drowns. As Hamlet flirts with pretended madness, the terrible truth of his father’s death is uncovered and everything spirals into tragedy.
